ORLANDO-KISSIMMEE, FL
Q1 2009 - MARKET SUMMARY
Of the 30 markets tracked by the HWS LMPI, Orlando was the strongest market for Q1 2009. Unlike most major markets in the country, the demand for health care workers in the Orlando metropolitan area continued to grow and the number of workers required to meet announced expansion plans remained inadequate.
Fueling much of this growth were recent announced expansions at Florida Hospital Celebration Health and Florida Hospital Kissimmee, both owned bv Adventist Health. Additionally, Osceola Regional Medical Center owned by HCA, announced a new 130-bed tower, Seminole Behavioral Health announced a doubling of the size of its facility, and Florida Hospital Altamonte announced a new surgical suite.
On a comparative basis, the Orlando-Kissimmee, FL health care labor market remains one of the strongest in the country and continues to grow. With a Q1 2009 LMPI score of 88.9, a 36% increase from the prior quarter, it is the fastest growing health care labor market in the country.

The recent rising unemployment rates create new demands for health services. Higher unemployment shifts the mix away from higher margin procedures to more primary care in the emergency room and critical care for conditions that should have been treated early at a primary care physician. In general, rising unemployment also reduces turnover and engagement of employed workers, while low unemployment tends to increase intra market churn. Below are unemployment rates for the overall Orlando-Kissimmee, FL market.
