The near-term demand for health care workers in the Miami area fell during the last quarter of 201q after a strong previous quarter. Among notable job cuts either announced or conducted during the quarter were layoffs at Jackson Health (240), National Healing Corps (49) and Maxim Healthcare Services (249).
On a comparative basis, the Miami health care labor market underperformed much of the rest of the country during the fourth quarter registering a Q4 LMP score of 41.2 compared to the national composite of 52.9 and down 25% from the prior quarter.

Jackson Health System to cut 240 jobs as losses mount. November 17, 2011
Reeling from huge losses in the first month of its fiscal year, Jackson Health System announced plans Thursday to eliminate 240 positions. For October, the public hospitals lost $9.6 million - a 50 percent increase over the $6.5 million loss in October 2010. “We can’t afford to have $10 million losses,” Chief Executive Carlos Migoya told Jackson’s governing board. “We need to take action now.” About 170 of the positions are filled by employees who will be laid off. The others are vacant positions that will be abolished. Most of the positions do not involve clinical care. The reductions represent 2.5 percent of Jackson’s 10,970 workforce.

National Healing announces merger, layoffs. November 3, 2011
The National Healing Corp. said it plans to lay off 49 workers and merge with Diversified Clinical Services.

Maxim Healthcare Services to lay off 287. October 12, 2011
Maxim Healthcare Services said it will lay off 287 people at its Miami Lakes location. The operation is a subsidiary of the Columbia, Md.-based company. Maxim Healthcare Services filed a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice with the state. It cited the non-renewal of a contract with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as the reason for laying off 243 licensed practical nurses and 44 registered nurses. The layoffs were to begin Oct. 1.
