Q4 2011 – Market Summary

The near-term demand for health care workers in the Cleveland metropolitan area slipped during the fourth quarter of 2011 after remaining relatively stable over the past several quarters. Of note, MetroHealth System announced plans to layoff 104 employees and to eliminate 151 vacant positions. It also plans to eliminate 83 jobs over the next six months with heavy projected losses over the next two years. On a positive note, Southwest General Health System is planning a two-phase expansion beginning with an expanded emergency department, critical-care unit, and parking garage, and a second phase including a new patient tower with 100 private rooms.
On a comparative basis, the strength of the Cleveland health care labor market as measured by its Q4 LMPI score dropped to 42.3 from 44.3 the prior quarter, and remained weaker than much of the rest of the country as measured by the LMPI composite index of 52.9 for the quarter.

The MetroHealth System has announced plans to lay off 104 employees and to eliminate an additional 151 vacant positions in order to stave off heavy projected operating losses over the next two years.
The county-subsidized health center will eliminate another 83 jobs over the next six months through “attrition, efficiency improvements and consolidation of operations,” according to a news release. The health system also recently announced the closure of one of its long-term care facilities, which resulted in the loss of 91 jobs.

Southwest General Health System plans $128 million expansion. October 07, 2011
Southwest General Health System plans to spend $128 million over the next four years for additions and improvements. The 358-bed hospital in Middleburg Heights plans to roll out construction in two phases, with the understanding that the second half could be delayed if the economy worsens. During the first phase, Southwest plans to expand its emergency department, build a new critical-care unit and add a patient parking garage on the north side of the main campus. The second phase, which is slated to begin in late 2012, will include a new patient bed tower with 100 private rooms and the renovation of most of its current two-person rooms into private rooms.
