The near term demand for health care workers in the Philadelphia metropolitan area improved slightly during the fourth quarter amidst a lot of activity. Of particular note were announced layoffs at Main Line Health (98), UnitedHealth Group (115) and Mercy Suburban (12). On a positive note, Holy Redeemer opened a new $1.5 women’s health center at Southampton, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children opened a multispecialty pediatric practice in Yardley and expanded and renovated its ED in North Philadelphia, and Lankenau Hospital prepared to renovate and refurbish its existing facility and build a new 96-bed patient-care pavilion.
On a comparative basis, the Philadelphia health care labor market strengthened during Q4 as measured by a Q4 LMPI score of 48.9, up 8% from the prior quarter and inline with the national composite of 49.8.

St. Christopher’s opens expanded emergency department. December 2, 2010
St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children has opened its expanded and renovated ED to deal with the increasing demand for dedicated pediatric emergency services. The North Philadelphia medical center spent $3 million on the project, which added 14 new private exam rooms and about 4,300 square feet to the existing emergency department.

Main Line Health cuts 98 throughout its hospital system. October 28, 2010
Main Line Health trimmed its work force by 98 people earlier this month in an effort to generate about $5 million in savings. The largest jobs cuts occurred at Bryn Mawr Hospital, where 34 positions were eliminated.

Physicians Care Surgical Hospital opens in Royersford. October 25, 2010
The region’s second doctor-owned medical center opened today when the Physicians Care Surgical Hospital started seeing patients in western Montgomery County. The Royersford hospital opened with 35 employees and three of its operating rooms in service.
