Q4 2010 – Market Summary
Despite an announcement in November by the Cleveland Clinic of a 200-person layoff, the near term demand for health care workers in the Cleveland area actually improved slightly during Q4 2010. Of note, Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights completed its $163 million renovation and addition in November that includes a new neonatal intensive care unit, nine new operating rooms and additional beds. In addition University Hospital’s Ahuja Medical Center is in the midst if hiring hundreds of new workers in advance of the new hospital opening in early 2011.
On a comparative basis, the Cleveland health care labor market remained solid compared to much of the rest of the country during Q4. Its Q4 LMPI score of 49.4 was up 8% from the prior quarter and is inline with the national composite of 49.8.

Mass layoffs continue to hit hospitals hard. December 16, 2010
The Cleveland Clinic announced Nov. 9 that about 200 employees would lose their jobs. Another 600 vacant positions were eliminated. Jobs cut included clinical and administrative staff, although not physicians.

The leadership team at University Hospitals’ $298 million Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood is in the midst of hiring hundreds of workers as the new hospital gears up for what’s likely to be a spirited competition for patients in Cleveland’s eastern suburbs. So far, the health system has hired about 325 for the medical center, the bulk of whom are involved with clinical operations, and the hospital anticipates about 400 to be on staff by the time the hospital opens in early 2011.

Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights completes $163 million renovation, addition. November 16, 2010
A $163 million expansion and renovation project gives a sleek look to Hillcrest Hospital. The tower includes a new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 24 beds; spacious single-patient rooms and nine new operating rooms. Over the next two years, Hillcrest plans to fill 100 new positions for doctors, nurses, technicians and others in patient care.

Cleveland Clinic puts Brunswick ER plans on hold. November 11, 2010
Plans for a full-service emergency room facility on Center Road have been tabled at least temporarily by Cleveland Clinic officials. Research into the specific needs of the community, how they are being met, and how they might be better served with the expansion are being considered.
