Q3 2011 - Market Summary

The near-term demand for health care workers in the Tri-state area remained steady during Q3 despite much activity. Of note during the quarter, Health Advocate will continue to add another 30 employees. CHOP has started work on a new ambulatory care center, while PHMC and Congreso de Latinos Unidos received a federal grant to create a nurse-managed health center in North Philadelphia. Nemours/duPont Hospital began on its expansion project in DE to expand and add 6o new beds at the children’s hospital. Lancaster General is looking to move into the region with medical offices and an urgent care center planned for Chester County. Also, Abington Health in Bucks County is planning a small pediatric hospice wing.

On a comparative basis, the strength of the Philadelphia metro health care labor market strengthened by 2% as measured by its Q3 LMPI score of 46.6, slightly lower than the national composite of 48.0.

Health Advocate Inc., which has added 60 employees since the spring, expects to add another 30 employees during the fourth quarter.

CHOP starts work on ambulatory center, part of $2B plan. September 9, 2011
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has started work on an ambulatory-care center at the old Civic Center property in West Philadelphia, part of an additional $2 billion the pediatric medical center plans to spend on expansion projects over the next six years. The 500,000-square-foot development will create more than 700 direct and indirect construction jobs.

PHMC, Congreso get $1.3M for N. Phila. health center. September 2, 2011
Public Health Management Corp., through its National Nursing Centers Consortium affiliate, and Congreso de Latinos Unidos have landed a $1.3 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to create a nurse-managed health center in North Philadelphia.
The grant to the Philadelphia organizations was part of the $28.8 million in funds HHS allocated to 67 community health-center programs across the country last week.
The funds were made available by the Affordable Care Act, and, according to the agency, will help to establish new health-service delivery sites to care for an additional 286,000 patients in underserved communities. The joint venture between PHMC and Congreso was one of local two organizations to get funding.

Nemours/duPont Hospital starts $260M expansion. August 26, 2011
The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital For Children, one of three stand-alone children’s hospitals serving the Philadelphia region, began a $260 million expansion project at its Delaware campus this week. The pediatric medical center is also looking to expand its physical presence in the Philadelphia suburbs, possibly with a new outpatient treatment center.
The construction project in Wilmington will feature a five-story, 425,000-square-foot patient tower that will allow the pediatric medical center to offer mostly private rooms for patients. The hospital’s overall bed count will grow from 200 to 260 once the project is completed in 2014.

Lancaster General targets Chesco for $15M health center. August 5, 2011
Another health system from outside the region is looking to set up shop in the Philadelphia suburbs.
Lancaster General Health wants to build a $15 million outpatient-care center in Chester County. The proposed two-story, 36,000-square-foot center in Sadsbury would contain an urgent-care center, provide offices for specialists and primary-care physicians and offer laboratory services, lab testing, imaging service, pulmonary testing and outpatient physical rehabilitation.

Area hospitals adding inpatient hospice units. July 15, 2011
Abington Health, which runs a 19-bed hospice unit at its Bucks County campus in Warminster, is planning to create the area’s first pediatric hospice wing. Abington Health is already working with an architectural firm to design a three-bed pediatric wing.

Md. firm taking over five centers
Mid-Atlantic Health Care plans to enhance the rehabcare services they provide to patients who wish to obtain care in their own communities. The company also plans to add 50 to 100 direct care jobs at the centers within the next six months. During the next five years, Rifkin said, his company expects to invest a total of $10 million to $15 million in upgrades at the centers.
