Q3 2011 - Market Summary

The near-term demand for health care workers in the Orlando metropolitan area held firm during the third quarter. Of note during the quarter, Celebration Health opened its new patient tower adding 62 new beds and a need for additional employees. HealthSouth proposed a new 60 bed rehabilitation hospital that would create and estimate of 200 new jobs. Also, Central Florida needs 36 new hospital beds, and Health Central plans to invest in capital projects, including a new bed tower, ER expansion and a post-acute facility.

On a comparative basis, the Orlando health care labor market remained inline with much of the rest of the country during Q2. Its Q3 LMPI score of 47.4, up 3% from the prior quarter, was just under the national composite of 48.0.

What’s next at Florida Hospital Celebration. August 2011
Florida Hospital is opening a new patient tower at Celebration Health. The 234,000-square-foot, $85 million expansion added 62 new beds, bringing the hospital’s total to 174. The hospital expects to have 98 employees in 2011, 144 employees in 2012 and 320 employees by 2018 in the new patient tower.

HealthSouth proposes 60-bed rehab hospital. August 19, 2011
HealthSouth Corp., the nation’s largest owner and operator of rehabilitation hospitals, wants to put a 60-bed rehabilitation hospital in Seminole County. The $18.75M facility would create 200 new jobs.

State: Central Florida should add 36 hospital beds. July 29, 2011
Central Florida needs 36 new hospital beds, which could mean more than $16.5 million in new construction, 30 new jobs with average salaries as high as $50,000 a year and expanded health care services in the area.
