The near-term demand for health care workers in the Cleveland metro area rebounded during Q3 despite some notable negative news. MetroHealth System announced plans to close its 144-bed skilled nursing facility in Old Brooklyn by the end of year, including a hospital and outpatient clinics and a loss of 450 jobs. On a positive note, University Hospitals announced plans to build a new rehabilitation hospital in Beachwood that will replace the 20-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and add 150 jobs to UH’s work force.
On a comparative basis, the Cleveland health care labor market improved after a lackluster Q2. Its Q3 LMPI score of 44.3 was up 10%, although remained under the national composite of 48.0.

MetroHealth System plans to close a 144-bed skilled nursing facility in the former Deaconess Hospital in Old Brooklyn within 90 days.
The news comes four days after MetroHealth Chief Executive Mark Moran confirmed that the health system, which includes a hospital and outpatient clinics as well as the senior center, would cut 450 jobs over the next two months. More than 100 of the reductions will come with the closing.

University Hospitals to build new rehabilitation hospital in Beachwood. August 2011
The facility will replace the 20-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Center that is housed on a single floor of the Hanna House on the hospital’s main campus in University Circle. The hospitals provided these projections:
•MetroHealth System has 390 residents and fellows, and spends $51 million annually on graduate medical education. Of that, Medicare covers $28 million. Under the most severe proposal, the system could lose as much as $16 million from Medicare.
•The Cleveland Clinic health system, with 1,200 residents and fellows, spends about $155 million annually for graduate medical education and receives $90 million from Medicare. It stands to lose as much as $54 million.
•University Hospitals, with 960 residents and fellows, spends more than $101 million annually for graduate medical education and receives $67 million from Medicare. The hospital system could lose as much at $30 million.
