Rowan-Cabarrus wins construction grant. September 27, 2011
Rowan Regional Medical Center President Dari Caldwell, a RCCC board member, wrote a letter of support for the grant. Charlotte: Business is better, but economy lacks uniform gains. July 15, 2011
Carolinas HealthCare System saw its patient volume climb during the first half of the year.
More people are scheduling physician visits, and emergency-room visits are up about 7% from last year. Volume is expected to remain strong at the Charlotte-based health-care system throughout the remainder of the year. That’s being driven by a larger slice of the regional market, hard work, a focus on providing excellent care and continuing to expand facilities and service lines to meet demand.
The health-care system opened its first freestanding emergency department in Steele Creek a little over a year ago. It broke ground on similar facilities in Huntersville, Kannapolis and Waxhaw this year - all are slated to open by early 2012. Carolinas HealthCare opened its first pediatric-urgent care facility. CMC-Mercy received the first Planetree designation in North Carolina for its patient-centered care at the hospital. At the same time, the health-care system plans $468 million in capital expenditures this year. Its list includes ongoing projects at CMC-Pineville and CMC-NorthEast, as well as new operating rooms at Carolinas Medical Center.
It all comes at a time when the health-care system is facing rising costs to care for the uninsured - more than $1 billion in 2010. And health-care reform stands to reduce payments for Medicare patients and potentially reshape the structure of how care is delivered.

The recent rising unemployment rates create new demands for health services. Higher unemployment shifts the mix away from higher margin procedures to more primary care in the emergency room and critical care for conditions that should have been treated early at a primary care physician. In general, rising unemployment also reduces turnover and engagement of employed workers, while low unemployment tends to increase intra market churn.
