Q3 2010 - Market Summary
The near term demand for health care workers in the San Jose metropolitan area continued to strengthen during the 3rd quarter of 2010. Of note during the quarter, Kaiser Redwood City announced that it began initial planning for a 149-bed facility that it will begin building next summer. Also of note, Santa Clara County officials unveiled details of new plans for a 60,000-square-foot medical clinic near the site of the old San Jose Medical Center and El Camino Hospital said it plans to lay off 140 by the end of October due to declines in patient activity and a drop in revenues.
On a comparative basis, the San Jose health care labor market remained strong during Q3 posting an LMPI score of 53.99, up 14% from the prior quarter, and compared to the national composite of 50.62, down 14% from the prior quarter.

Hospital cuts staff, hires robots to save costs. August 27, 2010
El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos and Mountain View, Calif. said it plans to lay off 140 employees by the end of October in an attempt to save money. The staff cuts are due to a continued decline in patient activity and a drop in revenues. In a separate move to reduce costs, El Camino has leased 19 robots. The robots–which reportedly save time and increase surgery success–deliver medications, lab samples, food and supplies around the hospital.
