Q3 2010 - Market Summary

The Sacramento health care labor market held somewhat steady during Q3 despite some layoffs at Sutter. On a positive note, Catholic Healthcare West announced plans to open a $20 million outpatient diagnostic and cancer treatment center in Sacramento later next year and Doctors Express, an urgent care company, expects to open six clinics in the area over the next 18 months.

On a comparative basis, the Sacramento health care labor market remained slightly weaker than much of the rest of the country during Q3 registering an LMPI score of 41.77, down 14% from the prior quarter and compared to the national composite of 50.62.

Catholic Healthcare West plans to open a $20 million outpatient diagnostic and cancer treatment center in Sacramento late next year. The new facility is expected to be the first of at least three CHW imaging and cancer treatment centers to open within the next decade as the health system aggressively moves into a competitive outpatient oncology market with centers away from hospitals in locations convenient for patients.

Doctors Express expects to open a clinic in Fair Oaks in early November. Five more are slated to open in the region over the next 18 months. The company offers a convenient, less-expensive alternative to local emergency rooms for patients who have urgent health care needs, are unable to get an appointment with their doctor

Sutter lays off 30 support staff. August 20, 2010
Sutter Medical Centers, Sacramento told 30 employees this week their jobs are being terminated, due to lower patient volumes. In addition to the cuts, four other employees were told Wednesday that their hours would be cut.

Radiological Associates plans $10M cancer center in Folsom. July 2, 2010
Radiological Associates of Sacramento plans a three-story, 21,000-square-foot building at the site. Radiation oncology services will be provided on the first floor, with medical oncology and surgical oncology on the other two.
