Q3 2010 - Market Summary

The near-term demand for health care workers in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area improved modestly during the third quarter of 2010. Of particular note, St. Clair Hospital added three new operating rooms, while Jefferson Regional Medical Center is adding new operating rooms at the Medical Center among various outpatient expansion plans. UPMC and Children’s Hospital also have outpatient clinic expansion plans in the area, and UPMC is adding 500 new jobs to its two main Pittsburgh campuses.

On a comparative basis, the Pittsburgh health care labor market gained 8% over last quarter but finished comparable to the national composite, registering an LMPI score of 49.1, near the national composite of 50.6, down 14% from the prior quarter.

Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s women’s health program part of expansion plans. September 10, 2010
Jefferson Regional Medical Center is planning to extend its affiliated imaging services to Charleroi, to staff a Wal-Mart medical clinic in West Mifflin and ramp up a new woman’s health service.

UPMC to open Natrona Heights clinic. September 10, 2010
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center plans to open an urgent care center in Natrona Heights. A doctor, nurse, radiological technician and office clerk will staff the clinic, which will offer x-ray and laboratory services in addition to care for minor medical emergencies.

Children’s Hospital plans two express care clinics. September 2, 2010
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will open two Express Care centers in the North Hills and South Hills within the next month. Express Care centers will be staffed by pediatricians, emergency medicine physicians, physician’s assistants and nurses who are specifically trained to care for kids.

Medical center to add 500 jobs. August 29, 2010
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will add 500 jobs this fiscal year despite a low operating margin. Jobs will be added to two of the 20-hospital network’s main Pittsburgh-based facilities, UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside.

Jefferson Regional plans $17.5 million expansion. August 25, 2010
Jefferson Regional Medical Center will break ground early this fall on a $17.5 million project, which will add six operating rooms and renovate and enlarge the hospital’s surgical suite. The addition will bring the number of operating and procedural rooms to 20 at Jefferson, which includes two existing cardiothoracic and vascular operating and recovery rooms.

Suburban General agrees to ER closing. August 13, 2010
The Suburban General Hospital Advisory Board agreed to what it had been fighting all along: to allow the hospital’s emergency room and inpatient facility to close. The agreement with the West Penn Allegheny Health System will guarantee that the campus in Bellevue will keep an urgent-care facility operating for at least three years

Education Program Expansions and Closures

More males than ever entering nursing programs. September 20, 2010
More males than ever are entering nursing school, according to administrators at Duquesne University, where men compose about 16 percent of freshmen in the four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing program. Male enrollment is up 6 percent from five years ago. Male enrollment also is on the upswing at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, with 14 male students out of 50.
