Q3 2010 - Market Summary

The near term demand for health care workers in the Orlando metropolitan area slowed considerably during Q3 2010 after a spike in Q2. Expansions announced this quarter were notably smaller compared to last quarter. Of note, Florida Hospital Waterman is adding an open heart surgery program early next year. The Walt Disney Pavilion is adding four peds operating rooms and 12 pre and post-operation rooms, in addition to a family lounge and consultation room. MD Anderson is collaborating with Orlando Health to provide cancer services at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, and the Department of Veterans Affairs is hiring 160 new employees multispecialty clinic this year. Also, a new psychiatric hospital is waiting for approval, which could create 203 new jobs.

On a comparative basis, the strength of Orlando health care labor market weakened in Q3, but remained strong compared to rest of the country, registering an LMPI score of 53.8 vs. the national composite of 50.6, down 14% from the prior quarter.

The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is expanding its facility with four new pediatric operating rooms and 12 private pre- and post-operation rooms, plus a family lounge and consultation room.

Health care has jobs - and plenty of applicants for them. July 30, 2010
Central Florida hospitals are still hiring and expanding, but human resources managers said turnover is lower and there’s a flood of applicants for each opening. Health Central, Osceola Regional Medical Center and St. Cloud Regional Medical Center, are hiring dozens of new workers. And Florida Hospital plans to hire about 3,200 new employees this year - with about of a third of those being nurses.
Orlando Health also has plenty of openings, with 319 posted on its website, a quarter of which are nursing positions. About 1,500 were hired by Orlando Health in 2009 and the trend looks the same so far this year.
