Q3 2010 – Market Summary

Despite new growth announcements, the near-term demand for health care workers in the Atlanta metropolitan area slowed during the third quarter of 2010, after a particularly strong second quarter. Of note, the WellStar Health System is planning an expansion from which it expects to create 500 new jobs. In the near future, the Northeast Georgia Medical Center will also get to start on an expansion in south Hall County.

Overall, the Atlanta health care labor market weakened during Q3 compared to the much of the rest of the country, registering an LMPI score of 54.3, down 29% from the prior quarter vs. the national composite index of 50.62, down 14% from the prior quarter.

WellStar Health System Inc. expects to create about 500 jobs in an expansion that will include a new hospital at its Paulding County campus.

After a four-year battle, Northeast Georgia Medical Center will finally get the chance to expand in south Hall County. Northeast Georgia Health System will now start the planning phase for the new health-care campus.

MCG Health planning to renovate marrow unit. July 23, 2010
Augusta-based MCG Health Inc. plans to seek regulatory approval to renovate its six-bed bone marrow transplant unit. The $6 million renovation will double the unit’s bed capacity.

MCG launches expansion, fix for state doc shortage. July 19, 2010
Georgia’s only public medical school is expanding beyond its base in Augusta in an effort to cure the state’s chronic shortage of doctors. Starting next month, 40 Medical College of Georgia students will be taking classes at a new campus in Athens established in partnership with The University of Georgia. Another 17 MCG students began on-the-job training earlier this month in a new residential clinical program based at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga.
