The near-term demand for health care workers in the Orlando metropolitan area dropped off notably during the second quarter. Of note, the Florida Senate’s 2011 proposed budget could cut $1.8 billion from hospitals statewide, including $182.5 million from three Central Florida hospitals, which could delay up to $600 million in planned local hospital construction projects. In other news Florida Hospital’s $90 million at Celebration Hospital was expected to result in 50 new jobs by summer.

On a comparative basis, Orlando health care labor market weakened during Q2 as measured by its Q2 LMPI score of 46.0, down 26% from the prior quarter and just below the national composite of 49.9.

Valencia breaks ground on Lake Nona campus. June 16, 2011
Valencia College broke ground on the first building of its new Lake Nona campus on Wednesday. Located in the northeast quadrant of Lake Nona’s “medical city,” the campus will join the University of Central Florida ’s medical school, the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Orlando VA Medical Center. The new campus will open up opportunities for students to study biomedical and life sciences. The campus will eventually accommodate about 5,000 students.
