Q2 2010 - Market Summary

The near term demand for health care workers in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area remained steady during the 2nd quarter of 2010. Of particular note during the quarter, West Penn Allegheny Health warned of up to 344 layoffs when its Suburban campus ends acute care, emergency, and surgical services. Forbes Regional Hospital and UPMC at Presbyterian and Mercy hospitals are all planning to add 9 or 10 ER beds. Also, Heritage Valley Beaver opened an inpatient rehab unit with 10 beds, as well as opening a Walmart convenient care clinic. Finally, Advanced Surgical Hospital of Washington County is opening with 14 beds as a doctor-owned, specialty hospital.

On a comparative basis, the Pittsburgh health care labor market has remained weaker than the national composite. Its LMPI score of 45.6 for Q2 2010, up 3% from the prior quarter, compares to the national composite index of 58.6, up 18% from the prior quarter.

West Penn Allegheny Health System officials today said they aren’t certain how many of the 344 employees at the Allegheny General Hospital Suburban campus in Bellevue will be laid off or transferred when the hospital ends acute care, emergency and surgical services.

Forbes Hospital plans ER expansion. June 8, 2010
Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville will add nine treatment rooms in the emergency department as part of a $1 million upgrade. Separately, UPMC is planning to expand the emergency departments at Presbyterian and Mercy hospitals by 10 rooms each, bringing the total at Presby to 44 rooms and the total at Mercy to 34.

Heritage adds inpatient rehab. May 21, 2010
Heritage Valley Beaver has opened an inpatient rehabilitation unit, with 10 private rooms and on-site physical, occupational and speech therapy. Also, last month, Heritage Valley opened its fourth Walmart convenient care clinic, in Monaca.

Washington County hospital prepares to open. April 23, 2010
A doctor-owned specialty hospital is preparing to open in Washington County. The 14-bed Advanced Surgical Hospital of Washington will be the anchor tenant in a 65,000-square-foot building. The total value of the project, which will include an MRI for medical imaging, exceeds $20 million and is expected to create 50 jobs.

UPMC Passavant prepares for growth. April 2, 2010
UPMC Passavant took the wraps off a seven-story patient pavilion and other improvements, which include a cancer center. The addition of 88 beds and other improvements at Passavant mean that residents of the fast-growing northern suburbs have fewer reasons to travel into the city for advanced care.
