Q2 2010 - Market Summary
The near-term demand for health care workers in the Orlando metropolitan area showed significant improvement during the second quarter of 2010. After a slight weakening during the first quarter, the index shows the Orlando area to be one of the strongest.
Of note during the quarter, HCA is opening a 60-bed sister hospital to Osceola Regional Hospital by 2013. Orlando Health is expanding its pediatric clinic network to add a 4th site for rotating physician specialists. The Florida Hospital Cancer Institute is opening its 6th medical and radiation oncology services center in Kissimmee. Also, the Ohme Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is expanding by 7 beds, and the Florida Hospital for Children is adding neonatal ICU rooms. Most significantly, the Orlando VA Medical Center project is estimated to add 1000 new healthcare related jobs upon completion.
On a comparative basis, the Orlando health care labor market is now the strongest of the other major metropolitan areas across the country registering an LMPI score of 119.23 for Q2 2010, compared to the national composite index of 58.6, and up 142% from the prior quarter.

HCA buys 10 acres for 60-bed hospital, medical office complex. June 18, 2010
The land will be used for a medical office building of up to 60,000 square feet and a $120 million, 60-bed hospital that will be a sister facility to HCA’s Osceola Regional Hospital in Kissimmee that should be up and running by 2013.

Orlando Health expands pediatric clinic network. May 28, 2010
Orlando Health is expanding its network of Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children’s pediatric specialist clinics, adding its fourth site. The new 3,000-square-foot clinic will have three to five permanent staff, plus 31 physician specialists who rotate between the four clinics.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking bids for the next piece of its $665 million Orlando VA Medical Center project - a much-anticipated $250 million-$300 million hospital. The project will create an estimated 1,000 new permanent health care-related jobs.

Education Program Expansion and Closures
New nursing degree programs on tap. April 16, 2010
Two area colleges will launch new bachelor’s degree programs in nursing this fall as hospitals clamor to hire more highly educated nurses. The Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences will offer a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Valencia Community College is partnering with the University of Central Florida on a nursing program that will let students get a bachelor’s degree faster.
