Q2 2010 - Market Summary

The near-term demand for health care workers in the Los Angeles metropolitan area continued to improve during the 2nd quarter of 2010. Of particular note during the quarter, West Hills Hospital and Medical Center opened a $60 million, state-of-the-art emergency department and critical-care unit, nearly a decade after the project was first proposed. LA County also broke ground on a $20 million public health center that will provide outpatient services in South Los Angeles as part of the larger Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Center Campus.

On a comparative basis, the Los Angeles health care labor market improved compared to the rest of the country. With a Q2 2010 LMPI score of 55.9, up 22% from Q1, the near-term demand for health care workers in Los Angeles is now inline with the national composite index of 58.6, up 18% from the prior quarter.

South LA medical center’s ground breaking first of many revitalization projects. June 11, 2010
Los Angeles County officials recently broke ground on a $20 million public health center that will provide outpatient services in South Los Angeles. The new center is slated to offer outpatient care as part of the larger Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Center Campus. Last year, the county Board of Supervisors approved a $353.8 million plan to reopen the MLK Medical Center. The center is expected to create over 10,000 new jobs in the community, along with the much anticipated new MLK Medical Center, Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center, and the MTA Rosa Parks Station.

ER, critical care units opening at West Hills Hospital. May 13, 2010
West Hills Hospital and Medical Center will open a $60 million, state-of-the-art emergency department and critical-care unit next week, nearly a decade after the project was first proposed. The new wing features 30 emergency room beds, and the critical-care unit has 33 beds.
