Q2 2010 - Market Summary

The near-term demand for health care workers in the Kansas City metropolitan area improved modestly during the second quarter of 2010. Of particular note, Children’s Mercy broke ground on a new 73-bed tower and Overland Park Regional Medical Center announced plans for an expansion could add a 105-bed tower and double the size of the emergency room to 24 beds.

On a comparative basis, the Kansas City health care labor market outperformed a number of other areas of the country during Q2, registering an LMPI score of 53.7, up 13% from the prior quarter, and near the national composite of 58.6.

Children’s Mercy Hospitals breaks ground on $48M project. June 17, 2010
Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics broke ground Friday on a 73-bed tower. In addition to the inpatient beds, the tower will house a new Fetal Health Center, expanded pediatric-intensive-care and oncology units, and the new Lisa Barth Interfaith Chapel.

Former first lady Bush will help open Saint Luke’s heart center. May 20, 2010
Former first lady Laura Bush will cut the ribbon Friday for the opening of the Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center at Saint Luke’s Hospital. The heart center is part of a $25 million project that also includes the Ellen Hockaday Center for Women’s Care. Services at the center include community education, risk assessments and screenings.

Overland Park Regional Medical Center plans expansion. May 14, 2010
HCA Midwest Health System has spent millions of dollars upgrading Overland Park Regional Medical Center since buying the hospital in 2002. On the drawing board is a project that would add a 105-bed tower and double the size of the emergency room to 24 beds.
