Q1 2011- Market Summary



The near term demand for health care workers in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area remained steady during the first quarter of 2011. Of note during the quarter, Excela Westmoreland opened an expanded emergency department while also announcing the closure of the former Mercy Jeannette Hospital.

On a comparative basis, the Pittsburgh health care labor market held steady during Q1, as measured by the HWS LMPI. Its Q1 LMPI score of 45.7 was up by 5% from the prior quarter yet under the national composite of 51.5.

Excela Westmoreland opens new ER. March 1, 2011
Excela Westmoreland Hospital on Tuesday opened an expanded emergency department, capping a year-long effort to enhance services, patient parking and ambulance access to accommodate more than 60,000 patient visits annually. With the addition, the department has 45 treatment room, up from 37.

Excela Health closing Jeannette campus. January 17, 2011
Excela Health will close the former Mercy Jeannette Hospital at the end of the month while relocating its medical diagnostic services to an expanded medical mall located in fast-growing North Hungtingdon Township. Fewer than 30 employees were expected to be affected by the shutdown, according to Excela. Displaced employees may find work at other system hospitals and facilities.
