Q1 2011 - Market Summary
The near term demand for health care workers in the Phoenix metropolitan area weakened during the first quarter of 2011 yet remained inline with much of the rest of the country. Of note, Banner Health announced plans to build a health center in the growing city of Maricopa and Scottsdale Healthcare announced plans to build a $17 million rehabilitation hospital.
On a comparative basis, the strength of Phoenix health care labor market, as measured by the HWS LMPI, was off 10% during the quarter, registering a Q1 LMPI score of 52.9, still above the national composite of 51.5

Banner Health targets Maricopa. February 23, 2011
Banner Health, Arizona’s largest medical system, plans to build a health center in the growing city of Maricopa. It will be the first major medical facility in the Pinal County community, which has a population of about 40,000. Phase I of the project is expected to create up to 30 jobs with the number increasing to 65 by the end of the fifth year

Phoenix Children’s Hospital to unveil new tower. January 28, 2011
Phoenix Children’s Hospital currently operates 345 beds. After the tower’s grand opening, the hospital will have 498 beds. The tower will not be fully operational for some time, as several floors are shell space that can be used to expand the hospital’s capacity as demand increases. Also, demand has been so great for the Cardon Children’s Medical Center facility that it added 14 beds in its pediatric emergency department this month.

Planned Phoenix medical schools could face a long road to fruition. February 25, 2011
Arizona’s physician shortage has spurred several plans to develop medical schools in the state, but how soon that will happen has not been determined.
Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic are in preliminary talks to develop a medical school in the Valley; plans are on track for the Creighton University School of Medicine on the campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix; and Grand Canyon University’s plans for its own medical school are in a “lull.”
