Q1 2011 - Market Summary



The near term demand for health care workers in the Kansas City metro area improved slightly during the first quarter of 2011. Of note, Shawnee Mission Medical Center finished its $20 million expansion, increasing the facilities capacity to 504 beds. On the other hand, Providence Medical Center and Saint John Hospital laid off a total of 89 employees between the two hospitals, due to fewer patients and increased uncompensated care.

On a comparative basis, the Kansas City health care labor market improved slightly as measured by its Q4 LMPI score to 46.8, up 2% from Q4 and weaker with the national composite of 51.5.

Shawnee Mission Medical Center finishes $20M expansion. March 3, 2011
Shawnee Mission Medical Center has opened the top two floors of its new critical care tower, a nearly $20 million project. The 265,000-square-foot tower increases the hospital’s capacity from the 383 beds of the older, six-story tower, to 504 beds between the two.

Providence Medical Center, Saint John Hospital lay off 89. February 17, 2011
Providence Medical Center has cut 72 workers as a result of fewer patients and increased uncompensated care. Saint John Hospital, another affiliate, trimmed 17 employees - bringing the total to 89 eliminated positions between the two hospitals.
