The near term demand for health care workers in the Cleveland metropolitan area fell during the first quarter as the state abandoned plans to build a new mental health hospital, expected to create 200 new jobs. However, Fairview Hospital is seeking approval to expand their ICU and ED. If approved they would expect work to be completed by 2013.

On a comparative basis, the Cleveland health care labor market weakened during the quarter as measured by its Q1 LMPI score of 44.2, down 11% from the prior quarter, and compared to the national composite of 50.5.

The state is abandoning plans to build a mental health hospital on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, a building that had been considered a cog in the revitalization of Midtown Cleveland. The decision disappointed city officials, who have already spent millions of dollars on the project and expected to see 200 new jobs.

Fairview Hospital seeks approval for expansion work. January 28, 2011
Fairview Hospital officials are seeking city approvals to expand the hospital’s Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, including a helicopter landing pad on the roof of the new ED/ICU facility and demolishing several homes for more parking. The expanded ED/ICU, which would open in 2013.
