Q1 2011 – Market Summary
The near term demand for health care workers in the Baltimore metro area improved more than any other major metro in Q1. Of note, were 4,500 jobs open in Baltimore’s health systems. Also, Anne Arundel and Johns Hopkins are working to build a new community health center near Odenton. CareFirst is looking to hire as many as 200 nurses in a new primary care medical home program, and Kennedy Krieger is hiring for 50 positions. Finally, the Maryland Health Care Commission approved Holy Cross Hospital’s plan for a 93-bed hospital in Montgomery County.
On a comparative basis, the Baltimore health care labor market improved notably in Q1, registering a Q1 LMPI score of 72.5, up 40% from the prior quarter and favorably compared to the national composite of 51.5.

The latest affiliation of health systems includes Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Medicine and Anne Arundel Health System, who have teamed up to build a new $14 million, 60,000-square-foot community health center near Odenton. The project, part of the larger Odenton Gateway development, will include primary and specialty care services and could open by the end of 2012 or early 2013,

CareFirst scouts for up to 200 nurses as part of rewards program. March 2, 2011
To help build its new primary care medical home program, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield expects to contract with as many as 200 nurses to help doctors coordinate patients’ care. The goal of the medical home initiative is to lower the cost of medical care by reducing hospital admissions and costly ER visits while identifying and treating illnesses more effectively.

Holy Cross Hospital plan for Montgomery County hospital approved. January 20, 2011
The Maryland Health Care Commission approved Holy Cross Hospital’s planned 93-bed new hospital in Germantown on Thursday, choosing the Silver Spring-based provider over a rival proposal from Adventist HealthCare.
