Q1 2010 - Market Summary

The Detroit health care labor market continued to improve during the first quarter of 2010, behind several notable announcements. Earlier in March, Detroit Medical Center was acquired by Nashville’s Vanguard Health Systems in a deal that wil bring at least $800 million in investment to the city over five years with $500 million in new facilities. In other news, Michigan Urgent Care Centers recently opened a new center in Grosse Point Woods, and Henry Ford Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms announced that it would close its inpatient medical, surgical, rehab and psych units and convert into a large multi-specialty outpatient center in April. Under the plan, the hospital will recruit another 30 physicians and add more than a dozen outpatient services over the next two years.

Overall, the Detroit health care labor market continued to outperform a number of other areas in the country during Q1, registering and LMPI score of 57.8 vs. the national composite of 49.9, and up 19% from the prior quarter.

Urgent care chain opens ninth center, in Grosse Pointe Woods. March 7, 2010
Michigan Urgent Care Centers are designed to support primary care physicians instead of directly competing with them. They recently opened a new center in Grosse Pointe Woods. Throughout Southeast Michigan the centers employ 115 full- and part-time workers, including 30 physicians, four physician assistants, one nurse practitioner and 80 support staff.

Gretchen Valade is donor of $3 million gift for new surgical lab at St. John Hospital. February 18, 2010
Gretchen Valade, CEO of Mack Avenue Records and chairman of Dearborn-based Carhartt Inc., has come forward as the donor of an anonymous $3 million gift made to St. John Hospital and Medical Center. The money will fund a new cardiovascular hybrid surgical laboratory which is expected to open this year, launching St. John’s new $5 million, minimally invasive structural heart program.
