Q1 2010 – Market Summary

After three strong quarters and a number of positive workforce expansion announcements, the demand for health care workers in the Atlanta metropolitan area fell off slightly during Q1 of 2010. Of note were 8 nursing layoffs at Grady Memorial Hospital, which are now among the 700 positions eliminated at the hospital since 2008.

On a comparative basis, the Atlanta health care labor market is now slightly weaker than most other major metropolitan areas across the country. For the 1st quarter of 2010, Atlanta registered an LMPI score of 45.6 compared to the national composite index if 49.9, down 18% from the prior quarter.

Hospitals renew expansion hopes. February 19, 2010
Piedmont Healthcare Inc. is moving ahead on its roughly $162 million hospital in Newnan - more than a year after it put the project on ice. Piedmont, which cited an inability to borrow for its initial decision to halt the Newnan project, said liquidity is trickling back into the market.

Grady cuts 8 nurses. February 19, 2010
Eight nurses laid off last week are the latest cuts at Grady Memorial Hospital to help with an increase in uninsured patients. The eight nurses, laid off Feb. 12, are among about 700 positions eliminated at the hospital since 2008, Grady CEO Michael Young said Friday. The layoffs will save the hospital about $500,000. Their duties will now be handled by physicians.
