West Houston Medical Center announces expansion. September 30, 2009
Officials at West Houston Medical Center have announced a $70 million expansion project focused on women’s, cardiovascular, surgical and critical care services, called The Woman’s Hospital of Texas at West Houston. Completion is expected by January 2012.

Harris County Hospital District withdraws bid for Memorial Hermann Southwest. September 17, 2009
The Harris County Hospital District has officially removed its letter of intent to acquire Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. After deliberation, the district’s board issued a statement that it would not move forward with the purchase.

HealthBridge Children’s Hospital unveils expanded facility. August 25, 2009
HealthBridge Children’s Hospital wrapped up an $11.4 million renovation and expansion that added 16 beds, sleep study services and brain injury programming. It also expanded the hospital’s outpatient services, including physical, occupational and speech therapy programs.

Work Close to Home: New facilities provide health-care, jobs in suburban Houston. July 31, 2009
St. Luke’s-The Woodlands Lakeside Hospital, a 30-bed facility scheduled to open in October 2009, will be a new cardiology and orthopedic projected to hire 150 new employees. Another project, St. Luke’s Hospital at The Vintage will be a full service hospital and a joint venture between St. Luke’s and 63
physician-investors, expected to have 550 job openings. Additionally, HCA is hiring personnel for 500 positions in facilities outside the Texas Medical Center.

Memorial Hermann to offer health insurance. July 24, 2009
After nearly three years of planning, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is reentering the health insurance business. The hospital system has joined forces with UniCare Life & Health Insurance Co. to roll out health plan MHealth Insured Inc.

Opening soon: Expansions, new projects scheduled for area hospital systems. July 3, 2009
Houston’s major hospital systems are preparing to open a number of new medical facilities to meet the area’s growing demand. The Methodist Hospital System, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System have entered the popular free-standing emergency room market.
Methodist Hospital System is opening Methodist Willowbrook Hospital’s cancer center and opened Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in October. Methodist West Houston Hospital, the 192-bed facility is scheduled to open in 2010. Memorial Hermann’s latest development is its Memorial Tower.

Memorial Hermann shifts radiology school. September 11, 2009
Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is getting out of the radiology education business. Memorial Hermann has transferred the system’s radiology technology school to an outside party, Pima Medical Institute of Tucson, AZ. The Houston campus will initially offer radiologic technologist associate’s degrees, but could eventually expand to offer degree programs in medical assisting, pharmacy technician, dental assisting and vet technicians. Pima may also expand with other campuses in the Houston area.
