HWS Workforce Indices & Indicators

Feedback from nursing and health care executives indicates a lack of timely, actionable workforce data at the local level. As health care facilities struggle to respond to nursing shortages, increased financial pressures and quality concerns, useful, accurate and timely data becomes even more critical. For example:

  • How many RNs in my labor market are planning to retire this year?
  • How many RNs can my facility expect to lose to a local competitor within the next 12 months?
  • How many novice nurses will leave the workforce for personal reasons in the next 12 months?
  • How do my RN vacancy rates compare to my competitors?
  • What other health professions are experiencing shortages in the local market?

In an effort to answer these questions, and countless more, HWS has launched a series of market-specific health workforce indices. Initially, these Health Workforce Indices will focus primarily on the local RN labor market and seek to provide meaningful data to inform workforce planning and development at the facility and system levels.

HWS Health Workforce Indices & Indicators currently include:

  • Temporary Leave Outlook
  • Retirement Vulnerability Indicators
  • Separation Vulnerability Indicators
  • Relocation Vulnerability Indicators
  • Intra-Market Churn Index
  • Vacancy Rate Index
  • Recruitment Activity Indicators
  • Contingent Labor Utilization Index
